This may offend some, sorry in advance.......

Just curious that the general consensus is on Holiday extravaganza......Halloween is coming up and there is usually quite the controversy over Christianity and Halloween. My hubby and I have always chosen the "Harvest" celebration approach, but that doesn't mean we don't have fun. My husband, Jer, has quite the eye for chain saw carvings and such and can look at a picture and see it in reverse. He'll carve that image on the pumpkin which looks like nothing until you light it, then it becomes a picture....I know about all the evil spirit yadayada that goes on, but do you think it is possible to have fun and still honor God during this time? Just wanting some input here and different views......Blessings!!!

Ok, I am adding to my post for a couple of reasons.....the first being that I found a picture that truly expresses our views of Halloween, I debated but my nutty side won out, so here ya go!

Secondly I read on FC (AHEM!!!!) that Tam & B's daughter Kassidy is having some medical issues....please keep the family in prayer, especially Kass. Thanks guys!!!!

I wouldn't worry too much about the supposed evil aspects of Halloween.

I myself find most of Halloween regalia rather tacky and in poor taste. Simply an excuse for some to engage in anti-social and at times macabre behavior.

I believe the whole idea behind Halloween is an homage to the pagan holiday known as Samhain. The Festival of Samhain IS a celebration of the end of the harvest season. Which is exactly how you are choosing to celebrate it.

I have heard Wiccans profess that the veil between the realms of the living and the dead is supposedly thinnest during Samhain.

As a former Catholic I can tell you that it is also All Souls Day...which is yet another catholic holiday placed on an old pagan one.

This truly is my favorite time of year! The air is drying out, the mosquitoes are DEAD, the apples are ready (ooooooo apple pie!) and the New England colors are starting to burst forth! I tell you there is nothing quite like an autumn drive through the white Mountains of new Hampshire!

One of the great things about being an atheist is I can choice to celebrate all holidays. The only thing that could offend me is if there weren't enough of them.

Everyday is a holiday somewhere.

The link below lists all the holidays celebrated around the world:

http://www.earthcalendar.net/index.php

Hover if you are reading this March 20th is World Frog Day.

Tam, May 10th is World Lupus Day.

For me October 1st is the International Day For The Elderly. It's also International Raccoon Appreciation Day. I suspect the raccoons are upset that they have to share their day with us old folks.

There are 24 days listed for Christianity. These include the holidays of all the different Christian religions.

sirrobert (I hope you don't go around wearing chain mail) ;)

I am also from New England, a Connecticut Yankee.

There is nothing pretty than the New England Fall foliage.

Gods Gal, when I was younger I preferred summer. Now the arthritis kicks in when it gets colder.

In winter one blankie doesn't do it for me anymore.

As you know I don't put much faith in superstition but Halloween gives me a great opportunity to make pumpkin soup and play with a knife so I'm all for it.

Hover,

I can proudly proclaim that for one brief, shining moment my little community because the cultural center of the Universe.

Well, at least the cultural center of Connecticut, USA.

We hold "THE Pumpkin Festival".

There are many wondrous displays of pumpkiny goodness.

Sadly, as a diabetic, I am unable to partake. I can have a piece of pie with whipped cream. However it would have to be a teny, tiny, little piece of pie with a teny, tiny, little drop of whipped cream.

Sigh! Why bother.

Hey Ed...my brother-in-law is a diabetic, but my sister makes sure he doesn't miss a beat....Here's a quick yummy recipe for pumpkin pie, you just put it all in the blender until smooth and pour it into the shell, let it set up. It's yummmy!!!! SO go make one and ENJOY!!!! Take care... :)

1 9 inch pie crust -- baked
2 small sugar free instant vanilla pudding
2 cups milk
1 cup canned pumpkin
1teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Thanks for the receipe. I will have to try it.

Of course that means getting someone else to cook it as I burn water. :)

Sorry for this BUT...

Oh I hate pumpkin!! YUCK!!!

It's just nasty to me!!

It's right up there with eggplant!

Which is really odd, considering I am half Italian. The other half being Quebec French.

Hey, I'm an Irish Swede so you don't want to mess with my recipes too much....LOL That's ok, if you and your family are ever around we'll stir up some tofu or something in place of the pumpkin..... ;)

I think you'll find that all of the major holidays, including Christmas and Easter, have pagan roots. I think that perhaps Halloween is just the most explicit about it. [shrugs] Each to their own, I suppose. I know I personally will be bringing up my child under a very different Christmas tradition to both those who worship Christ and Mammon at that time ;-)

Your right N, we have to pretty much celebrate the reason for the season, not the man made peagantry that goes with it. We have a blast with each one...thanks for your thoughts!!!!
